What is Gamma Mu?

The Gamma Mu organization is celebrating its 57th year in 2024 as the nation’s preeminent social and fraternal organization for professional gay men. The unique structure of the organization and the strong bonds of friendship between members have contributed to the success and endurance of Gamma Mu, allowing it to expand to 600+ members worldwide.

Prospective members are nominated and individually evaluated by a committee based upon their professional qualifications and abilities. One of the great successes of Gamma Mu has been its ability to bring together men who have excelled in their careers and younger applicants who show promise in their chosen professions. Today membership includes students who are leaders on their college campuses, men who work in the executive suites of the nation’s largest corporations, and others who have retired from full-time work and devote their energies to mentoring and engaging in philanthropic work.

In 1988 the members of Gamma Mu established a non-profit Foundation that occupies a unique niche in the charitable world, providing grants to worthy organizations in rural America to combat the threat of HIV, and to promote diversity and tolerance in smaller cities, communities, high schools and colleges. The Foundation has awarded 349 grants totaling over $2,330,000 million to worthy organizations in 42 states plus the District of Columbia, and its members have built an endowment of nearly $2.7 million. The Foundation has also provided 104 college scholarships totaling $179,000 at the graduate and undergraduate level to young gay men who have overcome personal adversity and who are making a difference in their communities.

As successful or up-and-coming leaders, Gamma Mu members also engage in their own personal civic and benevolent activities. Gamma Mu has always been non-partisan and does not endorse or promote outside causes. The membership list is never distributed – even to members – and individuals are never solicited by outside organizations.

Gamma Mu was founded on the principle of bringing together “people who enjoy people” and building international friendships. Each year the organization sponsors two major Fly-Ins that are organized by a committee of members in cities across the U.S. and around the world. These five-day events in the spring and fall are a highlight of Gamma Mu membership. Each host committee always surprises attendees with one-of-a-kind exclusive events that showcase the best of their city. In addition to the Fly-Ins, members gather at local homes for quarterly socials. The group also often travels together to special places and events such as Paris, Berlin, Budapest, Oktoberfest in Germany, Tahiti, south African safari, balloon and barge in the south of France, Palace on Wheels train around India, Carnivals around the world, multiple ocean crossings on the Queen Elizabeth II and other cruises and trips to exotic locales.

The heart of the Gamma Mu credo is building international friendships and for almost five decades professionals of all ages have gathered in friendship and camaraderie under the banner of Gamma Mu, which stands for “Good Men.” The Gamma Mu organization is celebrating its 57th year in 2024 as the nation's preeminent social and fraternal organization for professional gay men.
